Is Scalp Micropigmentation SMP Haram?

Is Scalp Micropigmentation SMP Haram?

Many Muslim men experience male pattern baldness or a receding hairline and seek effective solutions. One popular treatment is Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP). However, concerns about whether SMP is Haram often deter individuals from pursuing this option. Let’s explore what SMP involves and whether it is permissible in Islam.

Is Scalp Micro Pigmentation Allowed in Islam? Yes, it is permissible. Here’s why.

What Is Scalp Micro Pigmentation? SMP is a treatment where pigment is deposited into the scalp’s dermal layer to simulate the appearance of hair follicles. These pigment impressions resemble hair follicles from both a distance and up close, providing an effective solution for those with a receding hairline or hair loss.

Is SMP the Same as Tattooing? SMP is similar to tattooing, which leads to some confusion. Traditional tattoos are haram because they alter a person’s original appearance, changing Allah’s creation. However, SMP differs because it doesn’t modify the body; it restores what was once present.

What Ink Is Used? SMP uses a semi-permanent natural pigment instead of regular tattoo ink. The pigment is formulated from carbon black, dispersed into distilled water as the carrying solution (our pigment does not contain alcohol like others), a substance naturally present in the in food products and used in cosmetics. Additionally, SMP does not affect the skin’s ability to absorb water for wudhu or to release sweat.

Why Is SMP Permissible? SMP is considered a permissible treatment for hair loss, male pattern baldness, or a receding hairline under Islamic law. A ruling from the European Council for Fatwa and Research in 2016 stated that SMP is allowed because its purpose is to treat an ailment rather than modify the body. Moreover, the treatment is temporary, requiring periodic touch-ups, reinforcing that SMP is not haram.

What Does Allah Think About Baldness? Baldness is considered an ailment, and treating it is permissible under Islamic law, whether through hair transplants or coloring. It is similar to treating burns on the skin. Therefore, Muslims can confidently undergo SMP without worrying about it being Haram.

SMP is the best hair loss solution available today. It allows individuals to have a look they are happy and comfortable with. You can find answers to all your scalp micropigmentation questions on our FAQ page.
